History

The Penley House was built in 1889 as the private residence of the wealthy entrepreneur and Mayor of Auburn Albert M. Penley.  Penley was a merchant, businessman, and director of several important companies such as the Auburn Foundry and the Auburn and Lewiston Railroad.  He was a leader in local politics holding elected positions of Warden, Alderman and Mayor.  As Mayor he had an industrious two years bringing electric street lights to the city of Auburn and established a suitable place to dump city collected ashes and use the material to widen streets.  He was also a member of brotherhood associations and achieved the highest honor of 33rd degree Mason. Penley married Georgia Pennell and had 3 children: Georgia Maryett, John Albert, and Julia Lida.

In Penley's grand residence on Main Street, the craftsmanship of a bygone era is still apparent today. Tin ceilings, oak staircase, library bookshelves and original stained glass window are a few of the rich details that remain in the house.  From its individualized room decorations to the beautiful period details staying at the Penley House is a truly memorable and fun experience.  We pride ourselves in taking excellent care of our guests and making them feel at home from the first moment they step through the door.
